In the theoretical perspectives of social and cultural reproduction ‘normative growth tasks’ and ‘career’ trajectories themselves reflect the operation of power structures, serving to include, recognise and reinforce the achievements of those favourably positioned while excluding and reinforcing the disadvantages of others. Society structures opportunity, shapes experiences and outcomes and sets parameters for participation. Findings of the 16-19 Initiative, in the late 80s, provided further evidence in support of this, in its findings on ‘career trajectories’ (Banks et al 1992). In the 1990s, transitions became much less predictable, more fragmented. Has this resulted in a greater number of predetermined trajectories, or has transition become more subject to the individual’s ability to negotiate changing structures of opportunity?
